In 1941, on the island of Guernsey, four friends are stopped by soldiers for breaching curfewduring German occupation. When asked for their reason, they say they were returning from their book club, hastily named “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”, to avoid arrest.
In 1946 a London-based writer begins exchanging letters with residents on the island of Guernsey, which was German-occupied during WWII. Feeling compelled to visit the island, she starts to get a picture of what it was like during the occupation and write about the society.
