Event Details
Was Joan Lady Cobham a revolutionary? Her fourth husband, Sir John Oldcastle, certainly was; and her life at Polstead Hall, Burnham Norton might have sowed the seeds. Joan was arrested when Sir John was convicted of heresy, imprisoned and then escaped from the Tower of London. She was later set free (and went on to marry again after Sir John was recaptured and executed) and lived on to a good old age. The life of this real-life contemporary of Chaucer's wife of Bath was a dramatic and eventful one.
Susan Curran had her first book published in 1979, and has since written or co-written more than 30 published books, including a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. Her latest book, The Wife of Cobham, charts the life of Lady Cobham, her passion for Burnham Norton, the Peasant’s Revolt and the rise and fall of kings.
In this illustrated talk, based on her book, Susan will bring Lady Cobham to life and explore her revolutionary tendencies.
Ticket price includes wine and nibbles.
